THE REAL WORLD, ON THE OTHER HAND
June1, 2010 - June30, 2010

Jinson Joseph and I met through the Saatchi International internet site and I have enjoyed looking at his work for almost two years now. He is a prolific artist, experimenting in a variety of media from computer rendering to acrylic, to watercolor. His skills as a draftsman are exquisite and he applies the same sensitivity and focus to the beautiful paintings in this exhibition. While he has always been attracted to nature, these paintings introduce an approach to imagery that is original and unusual. For example, in the background of a subtle painting of Monochromatic Musing, he paints free abstraction, letting watercolor stain the paper in a natural pattern over which he exercises little control. Here is nature taking its course and acting as a support for a representational rendering of branches and leaves as only the artists eye can interpret. A subtle arc of grey christens this relationship and marks these different processes with mystery and appreciation like a prayer.

To some degree he repeats this approach in all of the current paintings but with diverse emotions expressed in color and composition. Color of the Stained Harmony, in which he uses more saturated color than in the rest, can be read as either a panoramic landscape or a micrograph of organisms inhabiting an invisible realm beyond the ability of the naked eye to see. The deep greens and reds cast the composition into a musical realm of somber tones and rolling, energetic crescendos. Black Halos, in which his abilities as a draftsman are confidently exposed, takes a more specific turn towards a landscape that seems like a real place, whether from memory or contemporary experience.

Jinson Joseph is a poet of nature and time with a commitment to painting that is poised to continue well into the future. I look forward to more of his mystical and lovingly painted images.
