WORK IN PROGRESS
February25, 2010 - March5, 2010

THE VISUAL arts in general challenge creative imagination. Photography is materially different because its primary inspiration lies in reality. I would personally define it as the art and science of preserving our realities. - - - - - - - - - - - - - This is definitely more complex than is apparent. Grabbing the viewer’s eyeballs requires subject matter to be interesting or unusual. Even if the subject matter lies within the scope of our awareness, our perceptions should be expanded to new understanding. The camera’s lens should be a third eye that magnifies and elaborates realities into something significant. In a sense, a good photograph virtually tells a powerful story.- - - - - - - - - - A mechanical contrivance is a mere element of this exercise. Even our realities have their relatively exceptional moments. They are rendered all the more challenging if the subject matter is rare or possessed of an ephemeral nature. It then takes true skill to zero in on those crucial seconds that transform a fleeting subject into a memorable and enduring image. An overall artistic sense must translate the resultant image into an aesthetically worthwhile experience. - - - - - - - - - - - “Work in Progress” by the young amateur Sachin substantially fulfills these parameters. His photographs mirror the minute dramas of nature. The actors are tiny winged creatures who are not entirely unfamiliar to us. We are however aroused to kinder awareness with the camera’s sensitive perspectives. The eyes of some of them speak to us with mute eloquence. The ant and the dead cockroach narrate their own striking tale. Our responses usually range from indifference to revulsion owing to the patterns of conditioned thinking. Sachin’s photographs endow even creatures like beetles and scorpions with a hitherto undiscovered charm. This endearing identity is the gift of an intimate lens that brings alive their intricate complexity of form and colour. - - - - - - - - - The vivid portrayal of enchanted hours and limited life spans that ordinarily bypass us give us a renewed appreciation of nature and the need to preserve its small wonders. We awaken to the connectedness that links all life forms; we can even relate with more understanding to those faiths which urge compassion to all living creatures as central tenets. A humane vision illumines these photographs which have a message for the environmental crisis of our times. - - - - - - - - - Sachin is a promising young photographer.“ Work in Progress” surely contributes to his continuing creative evolution. - - GISELLE D MEHTA Writer
